Maya H is a family run business with rich personal connections between India and the UK. We strive to put the heart of those connections into this enterprise, marrying the ancient Indian art of blockprinting with fresh, contemporary designs, inspired by nature.
About Maya H
Maya H started with a trip to Jaipur, where a mother and daughter discovered the beauty of traditional block printing. Inspired by the intricate patterns and time-honoured craft, Maya began sketching designs of her own - drawing from the flowers, foliage and colours of the English garden.
Those early sketches became the beginning of Maya H. Today, each design travels from paper to carved wooden block, before being carefully printed by hand in Jaipur, the ‘Pink City’. The result is a collection that feels at once rooted in tradition and completely at home in modern life.
A note from Maya
Maya H grew from my love of two cultures that have shaped who I am. With Indian and English heritage, I wanted to create something that brought the vibrancy, craftsmanship and tradition of India into our home in Sussex.
Nature has been a great source of inspiration - timeless shapes and delicate details that can honour Indian artistry, while introducing softer palettes and botanical motifs that feel at home in English interiors. Just as nature brings beauty to the everyday, I believe the things we love shouldn’t be saved for best. The most beautiful things are the ones you actually use - around the table, with family, friends and all the everyday moments in between.
The blocks
Once our designs have been created, wooden blocks are cut which separate the design into its different elements. This is because all the different colours, motifs and borders have to be printed separately for each product.
The printing
Next, the printing begins. The dyes are mixed and the tablecloths are created, building up the pattern in many layers until our design is fulfilled. This process can take up to several days.
The product
Once this is complete, the colours are fixed to ensure they do not fade. The finished product is a result of expert technique, skill and artistry.
